he 2017 UNESCO Chair International conference will be hosted in Sibiu, about 300 km N-W from Romania’s capital city of Bucharest.

Sibiu is a medieval city located in the heart of Transylvania which has a history of 1,000 years and one of the best-preserved, medieval city centres in Europe. It was Europe’s CITY OF CULTURE in 2007 (together with Luxembourg). (See http://www.sibiu2007.ro/index_en.php).

The city of Sibiu (Hermannstadt) has an impressive artistic and cultural heritage, with many cross-cultural currents and a multiethnic and multi-symbolic social structure. It was settled by Saxon colonists in the 12th century and was the administrative centre and capital of the Siebenbürger Sachsen, the German-speaking population of Transylvania. The historic centre of Sibiu is represented by the Grand Square (Piata Mare) located in the 'upper town' which is the trademark of the city. Most of the buildings here date from the 14th – 15th century. The lower side of the town is a charming assortment of old houses and cobbled roads, linked through narrow gothic passages to the Grand Square.

Sibiu, also known by its German name, Hermannstadt, was the third city in the Austro-Hungarian Empire to be equipped with electric lights in the early 20th century and the second to have an electric tram.

Sibiu is an easy city to explore on foot, one with an excellent selection of restaurants, sidewalk cafés, elegant coffee shops and beer gardens. Dormer windows overlooking the squares give the eerie impression that visitors are being watched - these are the wonderful 'eyes of Sibiu'! It is also very much a vibrant city with theatres, a philharmonic orchestra, jazz clubs and music bars, and host to a wide array of concerts and programmes of annual art and cultural festivals, some of them featuring open-air performances in the magnificent historic squares.
